At lunch when the command group (the boss) is in town they like to explore each dining facility (DFAC) on post and bring a crowd with them. My desk is highly visible from the hallway and it's close to the main door, so I get herded into the group pretty regularly, and let me tell you it makes for an entertaining meal. Our CSM has a chart created where he rates all of the DFACs based on food, parking available, line lenght and distance from work. It's quite impressive! Never underestimate the power of a foodie! But I must say that today's trip was probably my favorite. Probably just because the weather today was COOL, seriously, there was a cool breeze! So that put me in a good mood, and then when we went inside the people were nice! There were also more foreign troops there and I find it quite entertaining to listen to them talk and to hear what they talk about. The DFAC today was crowded but when someone turned around and walked into me he looked genuinely sorry and said, "Sorry love!' in the peppiest British voice. Then not 2 minutes later someone held open the refidgerator door so that I could get a drink out. Like I've told you before- it's the little things that count.
So the niceties aside, all of the DFACs are supposed to have a different 'national theme' but they all have basically the same options: greasy fried food, a salad bar, a sandwich bar, fattening desserts and spicy local food. Naturally I gravitate towards the salad and sandwich bars but unfortunately I think that the locals are inadvertantly (hopefully its inadvertant at least) poisioning us with insecticides or fertilizers because if you eat more than a small portion of the veggies it kills your stomach. I'm talking cramps and feeling nausiated for hours! So now I have to limit it to a small portion of sliced cucumbers and some olives or other veggies in the same amount. I stay away from the cauliflower now because of the first time I tried it and it was spicy and especially because my bathroom smells like cauliflower! Talk about losing your appetite.
But dietary restrictions aside- lunch hour with the 'posse' is always fun because we cram as many people as we can in the range rovers and cruise around Kandahar Airfield trying out the 4 or 5 different DFACs and acting like food critics as we do it.
Ah good ol' KAF--
