Temporary home #5

I was right. We got word that we were supposed to move rooms 4 hours before we were expected to show up and sign for the new rooms. Thankfully our frantic office move prepped me for another move on the fly, and I was excited to leave portapotties and long walks to the shower in my past. The difference with this move though was that unlike an office move, a personal move does not take priority over work. That means that after I worked until around 9:15pm I got to go back to my room and load my belongings into a truck. Just like every other time I have moved, I cursed the number of things I deem a 'necessity'. This time that curse came when I was loading my freebie plastic drawers into the truck. Imagine a short girl, loading a semi heavy set of drawers into the bed of a full sized truck (where the tailgate conveniently wont go down). I don't know how that normally pans out, but in my case it means me tipping the drawers too far, losing my balance and almost falling over backwards, overcorrecting and dumping the contents of one of the drawers all over the gravel road. After the drawer slipped out, hit me on the head and spilled its contents onto the ground I managed to get the remainer of the drawers in the truck before I went back to fetch all of my dusty odds and ends from the ground.
Thankfully that, along with traversing these death-stairs were the only bad things about the experience!

Seriously, those stairs are dangerous. They aren't wide enough for my entire foot to fit on them and they're steep, not to mention metal. Tripping down those stairs would mean a trip to the hospital.
But now that I'm moved in, I don't have to face them with my arms full again (thankfully). All in all, the death-stairs are worth it because look at this room!

I'm sure that not seeing a real building in about 4 months has warped my perception, but I'm pretty sure that this room is better than the dorm I had in college. Especially since I don't have to share! Did you notice what was in the bottom left corner? That's right, my new room has a fridge and a microwave! This move has everything I can even think to need from a living space. To include my own pet lizard.

Don't worry, I caught him and carried him outside. I'm not trying to have a lizard crawl on me while I'm sleeping!
My room also has it's very own window (and black out blinds in case I'm a day sleeper) and it's about 40 yards from the DFAC, so I'm sure my fridge will be stocked in no time!
Another huge bonus is that on my walk home from work each day I get to walk under these beauties:

Don't take trees for granted. Seriously.
If I had come out here in the spring you can bet I would have planted some desert flowers/plants and cultivated them to help increase the beauty (and clean air produciton) on Bagram. It would also make my walks much more enjoyable.
Speaking of walks.. Sunday morning I had a nice long one. I woke up and realized that I was out of clean clothes (a side effect of focusing on moving), so I put on my PTs and made a plan to walk to the laundry point to pick up my laundry, and then to my old room to grab some more of the stuff I left there. After I left I realized that I forgot my laundry slip. I was irritated for a second but then I thought, "It's ok, I've only walked a little way, at least I didn't get all the way there without it!" and I turned around to go get it. Then after I picked up my laundry I turned for my old room and realized that I also forgot my keys! Yes, I am that girl. The one that forgets not one, but two things and has to make not one, but two extra trips. I started the trek back and after mentally chastising myself for being so forgetful, I applauded myself for having enough self-awareness and foresight to stash an extra room key in my office.
My scatterbrain turned my 1.12 mile walk into a 1.82 mile walk. Haha at least the weather was nice and I wasn't pressed for time...

I'll try to get another post together as I get settled into my new room, but I would like to remind y'all (again) to give me some suggestions so I don't bore you with the same topics on repeat!

PS I'm working on my post about the other nationalities that I've worked with for your special reading pleasure, so please send me questions or areas to focus on if you're interested!

You realize for every one lizard you can see, there are probably at least three or four more hiding where you can't see them. Just thought you would like to think about that tonight when you go to bed! =)
