The Bane of My Existence

Staff Duty.

For those of you that are lucky enough to not know what staff duty is, I'll explain. Staff duty is where the Army forces you to have a sleep over at work. In uniform. Without any friends. Oh, and you don't get to actually sleep. Or drink. Or get on Pinterest because the Army decided that they would block it for being 'Social Media'. Hello, I can get on Facebook, Twitter and Blogger! Why not Pinterest where I can actually plan something creative and productive?
So basically it's not a sleep over at all. More like adult detention, except you don't get it for cheating on a test or running in the halls, you get it randomly. Sometimes on the weekends, sometimes on the Holidays. Coolest. Thing. Ever.
I'm super irritated glad that no one told me about all of the awful wonderful additional duties you get when you sign up to be a uniformed paper pusher cool, war-fighting terrorist-killer.

What do you do while on staff duty you ask? Well, my friend, you do SUPER IMPORTANT STUFF. Like inspecting the goods; its your job to make sure your units area is in order, secure etc. It's done at all levels and it's actually a pretty good way to deter theft and tom-foolery. You're also on-call in case sh** hits the fan. More realistically though you're awake and by the phone so people can sign in and out for leave and you're there in case someone from your unit gets in trouble (DUIs etc). Lets hope that the folks in my unit can keep this Tuesday night incident-free!

As a thanks for sacrificing your night, the Army provides you with lush accomodations:

That's the bed. No thanks, I brought my own.

Officers on Staff Duty get to catch some sleep at night, unlike the NCOs and Junior Enlisted, but that's because they have to work the next day when the NCOs and Junior guys get the next 24 hours off. I've heard both sides argue about which set up is better, but lets face it: Staff Duty sucks no matter which side you're on.
Especially when the army thinks that the air conditioner needs to be running on high, non-stop just because we're in Texas and it gets hot in the summer. I can't adjust the buildings temperature but thankfully I scrounged this baby up!

So now that you know of the joys of Staff Duty you can either laugh at my misery or take a moment to be thankful that your job doesn't have mandatory sleepovers work-overs.
I'm going to get back to planning my next few projects. Be on the lookout for posts about cute DIY headbands modeled by my adorable daughter and my attempts to make rugs for my kids' rooms!
