Sorry I haven't been posting very frequently, my work schedule has been a little bit hectic! Yesterday I was at work for 17 hours, then I got 5-6 hours of sleep and I was back at it today. One of the frustrations of sleeping in a tent with a bunch of other people is that there are people up at all hours, and in my particular tent the door wont stay closed and locked unless you slam it! So needless to say, I am in desperate need of a shower and a good nights sleep.
Since I've been here for a while I will update you on a few more things that I've observed about the area: First, it is so dusty here that you can't see the blue sky, clouds or sun.. ever.. But you better believe that you can feel it! The highs for the last week and upcoming week are around 110 and it is extremely dry. I put lotion on when I wake up in the morning, after I shower and before bed! Not to mention the 5-10 times a day that I put lotion on my hands, to keep from looking like a prune!
Oh and if you ever talk to anyone that has been to KAF before and they tell you that the PX 'has everything that you'll need', you look them right in the eye and say, "you're a dirty liar!" I was naive and gullible enough to believe the people that told me that. Now I am writing home and begging for essentials to be mailed to me, post haste! In all fairness I should explain that I use the term essentials lightly. I'm not in any way suffering where I am, I am just not enjoying the comforts that I expected to have.. Like decent tweezers. Guys really don't understand the value of a good pair of tweezers! And nail polish and nail polish remover. I'm not trying to have the cutest nails on the block, but a good base coat and clear top coat would do wonders to my brittle and painfully short nails!
My final observation for the day is this: If you are a picky eater, just plan on eating paleo while deployed. Our wonderful chefs like to add chili powder and any other spicy powder/spice they can get their hands on to EVERYTHING. A few days ago I walked in and smelled lasagna and french bread and I was so excited to eat it, then I took a bite and choked. They added chili flakes to the garlic bread! Who eats spicy garlic bread?! So the main staples of my diet are now self-made sandwiches and paninis, fresh fruit and fresh veggies.. although I have to avoid the cauliflower becacuse they sprinkle something spicy on that too. I have no idea why.
My break is over, and I need to get back to work, but I will try to get a post in at least once a week. If you want to send me care-packages, or want personal updates, feel free ;) just shoot me an email and I'll send you my address!
