Now that I've gotten off work early, and yes, after 8pm with over 12 hours in the office for the day is early, I have some time to do something other than crawl straight into bed. I also had a rare and beautiful moment of privacy, so I turned on all of the lights in the tent and took a few pictures of my bunk!
As you can see I hang my towels from the bed above me to block out the light and give me the feeble illusion of privacy. I also use my poncho liner (the army patterned silky blanket strung between the bunks) to block out more of the light and people. Before any of you crafty DIYers judge me- its ALL I had to work with! If I had known in advance I would have brought some cute home made dividers, I promise!
The final object of note in the picture is that awful, noisy door! Between the slamming when people come and go and the insanely bright morning light that seeps in, it accounts for 55% of the reason I wake up unnecessarily. The other 45% is courtesy of the United States Air Force. Their pilots like to show off their fancy planes late at night and very early in the morning.
I will begin the grand tour now: In the entry way you'll notice my garbage can, it's not the classiest of locations but it is as far away from my head when I sleep as possible, which as far as I'm concerned, trumped class when I was decorating. To the left is the guest room, it sleeps two (zero comfortably) and is a little drafty. Above the spare room is my wall of pictures, and beyond that you'll see the laundry room (aka white laundry bag hung off the top bunk). Then when you move on to the right you enter the walk-in closet, which holds my ginormo rolly bag and white plastic storage drawers that I found abandoned outside of a vacant tent. With a little T-L-C and a large amount of Clorox I brought it in to join my eclectic home collection! Immediately next to that is my master bath, fully equipped with a 5" circular mirror, brush and hair ties. The 1/4 bath leads in to my spacious bedroom, decked out in the finest linen that the Kandahar Px had to offer, with a wonderful 2x4 accent rug (that does a fantastic job keeping my feet dust-free and warm for the low price of $12). My freebie-dresser doubles as my night stand and triples as my office and supply closet. This concludes my tour, but if you'd like to stop by the pantry on the way out (which is conveniently located next to the garbage) you can help yourself to refreshments: water, mountain dew and breakfast bars.
So it isn't exactly Better Homes and Garden worthy.. But it's a whole lot better than what people were living in back in OIF 03-04! And rumor on the street is that we'll be upgraded to the penthouse suite in a few days / weeks. By penthouse suite I clearly mean actual buildings (that look strangely like tents coated in spray-foam insulation painted a neutral sand color) with their very own bathrooms, laundry facilities outside and ... Wait for it... You only have to share with 3 other people! But that's just word on the street, so we'll see how it turns out.
I hate to be a rude host, but after my long day I am going to have to end the housewarming early and retire for the night. Thank you all for coming, and don't forget to subscribe for the latest and greatest and comment if you have any decorating tips or suggestions ;)
