DIY Farmhouse Bed

While I have been away Matt has been busy! Aside from re-learning household chores and discovering the art of baking, he found a wonderful way to pass the time.
He made a trip (or two) to Home Depot and turned this:
Into this:

Yeah, he built that beautiful bed!
According to him it wasn't terribly difficult either. So here is the run-down on how he built this queen sized farmhouse bed.
The materials for the project cost around $250, which includes lumber, stain etc.
Build time was only 8 hours including assembly! Factor in 24 hours for the stain to dry and you've got yourself a weekend project!
Things you'll need:
Ana-white.com - genius website with easy to understand, step by step tutorials on so many projects. Seriously, so many.
Table saw - (fear not, if you don't have one you can either have the wood precut at a store like Home Depot or Lowes or you can use a circular saw)
brad nailer - (you can made due with a hammer)
drill - you kind of need this one..

Don't mind the mess, he isn't the tidiest of workers ;)
After building the head and footboards Matt applied the stain (we used Minwax Hickory Gel Stain) and opted to skip the glossy top coat.
We like the way it looks without it, it just feels more warm and farmhousey.
The only advice we offer is to buy a few more 2x4s to support the bed. After building it Matt decided that was what he wanted to do (no pictures of the addition, sorry).
Finally, this beauty was intended for a bed without a box spring. As you see in our finished product, we have a box spring.
Instead of tossing out the box spring Matt is going to raise the footboard 4 inches. There aren't any structural issues with it this way, that will just make it easier to make the bed!

After seeing Matt's impressive handiwork, he admitted that he enjoyed building things. Little did he know that I would promptly provide him with a two page list of things he can build for the house while I'm gone! Poor Matt. Lucky me! And lucky you because we'll post our projects for other part-time DIYers to try.
He's already hard at work on an entry way bench, so be sure to check back in a few days to see the fruits of his labor!
